![]() | Book Signing in Half Moon Bay With Brandon Sanderson: Brandon Sanderson jumped onto my radar after it was announced that he would be continuing the infamous Robert Jordan series Wheel of Time. This past year the first of the last three books written by Brandon Sanderson to finish Jordan's series was released: The Gathering Storm. Beyond the work Sanderson is doing to finish Jordan's epic legacy, I found out that he's an amazing author in his own right. His Mistborn series (which I really need to post reviews of sometime in the near future) is everything a fantasy series should be. Really, I'd recommend reading the series (which is 3 books long and complete) to everyone and anyone. |
Getting to Half Moon Bay was quite the trek. I won't go over all the trials and tribulations, but just know that the anticipated 2-hour trip became a grueling, painful journey and we were almost late, despite having left insanely early.
And then when we got there, the store was tiny and everyone was packed into it like standing sardines. Being 5'3", this was particularly annoying for me, because I couldn't see either Brandon Sanderson or Harriet McDougal while Sanderson spoke and answered questions or while McDougal read. Although I understand the coordinator has something against straight lines and organization--and that's great in idea--but in practice it sucks for small girls like me.
Thus, because of those circumstances, I only have one picture from the event:

Here I am looking awkward (left) with Harriet McDougal (center) and Brandon Sanderson (right).
I will halt my complaining to say that both McDougal and Sanderson were just amazing. Both seemed genuine, earnest, and fun. In fact, there was much swag being passed around. Everyone got bumper stickers, WoT maps, and other stuff. There was even trivia for those more knowledgeable about WoT than I am. Thus, I certainly can't fault either McDougal or Sanderson because the event turned out to be one of the worst I've attended. After all, they both certainly tried and worked with what they were given. The blame will rest with the book store. Regardless of the serious bumps along the way, I was so glad to meet both McDougal and Sanderson that I'd do it all over again, if I had the chance.

Sounds like quite a journey! I didn't know you have read the Mistborn series! I look forward to your reviews! Great pic of you and the authors, btw! :)
awesome!!! Brandon sounds like he really enjoys what he does.
BTW, did you get a haircut???
@Lily: I'll try to get them up when I can! I'm incredibly impressed with Sanderson's writing. Actually, he's the reason I'll be reading WoT in 2010. Thank you! :)
@Auffer: I think he does. And yes I did. :)
That's awesome that you got a picture with Brandon! He seems like a really cool person. I've been thinking of trying picking up WOT again just to read the books that Brandon Sanderson will be writing (I had read it years ago but stopped at book 3) but I'm not sure if I have the energy to go through the whole series.
@Simcha: He and Harriet were so nice! And if it would help, BLA is doing a reading challenge/group for WoT all 2010. It may be more fun to re-read if you do it with a group. :)
Very cool TJ! I'm sorry to hear the store didn't plan or organize the event well, but isn't it always fun when the best is made of the situation? Congrats! :D
Looks like the hassle was worth it all in the end. Glad you got to them though. :)
