Wheel of Time Reading Challenge 2010
I've hinted a few times that Book Love Affair was planning on a 2010 book club-like challenge. And I've hinted at wanting to work my way through Robert Jordan series Wheel of Time all the way until Brandon Sanderson's continuation book. And, well, there's 12 books in the series (as of Oct. 27, 2009), so it all seemed to add up to me. A challenge is quite a commitment--and particularly so when one's committing to a single series over the course of the year. What I hope is that we can forge a new community of WoT fans through reading together and discussing together. Please make this one of your reading challenges for 2010, invite your friends, and be ready to read and discuss one of the most epic fantasies of them all!
Why The Wheel of Time?
WoT is one of the most influential and massive epic fantasy series. As someone who thinks of themselves as a fantasy fan, I've felt guilty about not having read WoT for years.
How does the challenge run?
This challenge is a little out of the ordinary, because I want to implement a book club element to it. It's good and well to read a book and cross if off the list--and we have that element here--but it's even better when you can talk about the book, too. Thus, we'll all read a book of WoT a month and meet back here to discuss it on the last day of the month!
Where's the reading Schedule?
The schedule begins in January 2010. All discussion posts will be linked through this post, so that this post can become an all-purpose navigation post for the WoT challenge.

Do I need to sign-up?
To add a little motivation, I'll be choosing two participants to win a grab bag of goodies that I'll collect over the course of the challenge. There will be one grab bag given out in June and one in December. These grab bags will contain no less than 3 books each. I'll post about their contents as the time moves on. Only those participants who officially sign up and actually participate will be eligible. Winners will be chosen not randomly, but upon how helpful they are in discussions and active. Points will be given for referrals (who at least participate in 2 discussions), advertising the challenge on your blog, comments on the discussion posts, and anything else I view as being helpful to the challenge. The first 10 to sign up (not including myself) will receive +1 point to begin. Additionally, there will be a handful of random giveaways for random commentators/participants, so if you miss out on some of the discussions, you still have a chance to win something. (Grab bags and giveaways are open internationally, but you must let me know if you live outside of the US.)
Sign-up for the challenge!
Leave a comment below with your name (or nickname), email, and blog url (if you have one) to be added to the list of participants. You don't have to be on the list of participants to participate in discussions, but I appreciate it (and you must be on the list to be eligible for the giveaways). Also it helps me know who's interested in receiving email reminders 2 times a month (1 email on in the second week of the month to remind about what book we're reading and 1 email when the discussion entry is posted). If you'd like to be on the participant list but not receive emails, just don't include your email in the comment. This will also be where you can see your accumulated points.

FAQs:
Will there be any kind of discussion for New Spring, set before book one?
Currently I have no plans to include New Spring. But who knows, perhaps we'll all be so excited that we'll just tack it onto the end.
Will I be receiving a ton of emails if I sign up for the email notifications?
Only if you consider 2 emails per month "a ton".
Can we break the books up into smaller chunks?
I totally understand the concern. The books are big. Huge. However, I don't want this challenge to be stressful for anyone--and I want people with limited time to be able to participate, so I can't really "break things up". What I will do is try to provide helpful recaps and information to jog everyone's memory about book events and start discussion. Once we do the first month discussion, I'd love to hear feedback on if the format works for you or not.
Are you aware of the Tor.com re-read?
Indeed I am! We may or may not be referencing it over the course of our year with WoT.

I'll be participating! I'm excited.
My LJ is locked, so I'm only using that to identify myself.
I can be emailed/reached at
aslerastar at gmail dot com and my name is Lera :)
Wow, that's ambitious! Jake tried to get me to read the first book in the series, which I have yet to do. I am not the best person for book clubs or book challenges, so I most likely will no participate. Best of luck though! Sounds like an awesome challenge! :D
YES! I wanted to re-read these before the new one, so this is the motivation I needed! I've never participated in an online book club, so thats a first for me too. Now I just have to beg and borrow copies of the books...
Awesome! I am in! This is my blog: http://misha-mcg.livejournal.com/
This sounds great! I am not sure if I will be able to participate in this great challenge.
FYI: You can get the first book in this series for $3.49 Free Shipping at the Book Depository. Here is the link http://www.bookdepository.com/book/9780812511819/The-Eye-of-the-World
Yes! This is so incredibly cool, you don't even know. I'm totally in...I hope? I'll cross my fingers for keeping up, but I'm still not sure if I can commit fully. So this is a tentative registration...?
I'm Landon (landonhkramer at gmail dot com) and my blog can be found here: http://lakramer14.livejournal.com/
@Landon: Sign ups are tentative, yes. :)
I actually just finished reading the whole series up to this point a couple of weeks ago, so will not be signing up..there's NO WAY I can wait until next December to read the next one...I doubt I"ll be able to wait until THIS December!
Ooh I am interested in this. I have been trying to finish the series for awhile now. I am signing up.
My name is Laura and my email is
cardiak33 @ gmail.com.
Will I be able to get a reminder email before it starts so I can remember to get my books unpacked; I just moved and there is no room for my books. =(
Yup, I will be sending out a reminder to begin email at the end of 2009! :)
oh i am so in.
i try and read this series every year or so (ive been slack this year, only read the Mat bits and then got sidetracked halfway through crossroads ^^;; )
anyway. name - Sauke
Email - tmlinke (at) wideband.net.au
can be found at entwinedangels.livejournal.com and am in australia if thats needed?
I'm totally in! I am so obsessed with the series~
I'm Emily (please call me Meily) and my email's at meilychanster at gmail dot com.
Alright! I entered you in as Meily with "Emily" noted so that I remember. :)
Fascinating! I'm not signing up because I already have enough challenges (between calico_reaction and then my private ones with friends), but I like the idea. :) Looking forward to your reviews!
I read about this on LJ, and I definitely want to join in! I've never heard of this series, but I'm a big fan of the fantasy genre so I'm sure I'll like this.

I really should sign up for this. I've been meaning to read this series for years but haven't gotten to it. I just read Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson & really enjoyed it. I saw that he is finishing up the WoT series so interested in reading that.
I'll go ahead and put you on the list, Debbie. Then if you turn out having the time, you can join in. :)
I have books 1-8 and I haven't read them for close to ten years. So this will be a great way to re-read the ones I have read and to buy the newer books to finish my collection.
My e-mail is: selwyn_jp @ hotmail dot com
I am looking forward to this challenge and discussing the books with fellow challengees! :D
@Selwyn, you're the last to get bonus points for signing up! :)
I started the books this summer and am only on TSR #4. I would love to participate and discuss with fellow fans.

Thanks for doing this!

I would love to be involved with this. I have read the first 10 books, but I have to reread them all so I can buy book 11 and 12 and read it so this is a perfect opportunity. How exactly do I sign up?
I am so on! I'm Pedra and my email is shaidar03 @ gmail dot com. I've read through all the books at least 4 times (more depending on the book) and LOVE the idea of a book club challenge!
I'm in! This sounds like fun! I've never done anything like this, but I need to re-read the series (again) before I can move on to #12 anyway, and this seems to be a great way to do it. My email is omerritt@cox.net
Im in, my email is trench158@hotmail.com
Sounds like fun! My name is mario and my email is mariopolo84@gmail.com
I can't wait!!! I'm almost done with TGS.. its so good!!!
I'm in, since I don't live in USA and I read the books on different language I'm not asking for any 'giveaway' I'm just in because I love the series and I want to reread it.
My name is Fedor and my email is fedorhajdu [at] gmail {dot} com
Oh yeah woops. I live in Canada so I don't know about the giveaway thing either but I'm still in just to at least participate.
I'll participate. Every time I'm finished with re-reading the series I feel like re-reading TEotW again, and so I start reading the series all over again :)I'm on KoD now, I'll be done next week in time for the arrival of my TGS version(I live in Norway, so I wont get it on time).
So I don't know how eligible I am for giveaways, but I'll join the "book club" I think.

Will there be any kind of discussion for New Spring, set before book one? It kind of ruins the whole 12 books / 12 months perfection though.
Please add me too!
I've been wanting to read this series since forever so I guess 2010 is as good a year to start as any. Not to mention the book club-y discussions are an extra incentive :)
My email is kay at kaysbookshelf dot com.
Predictably enough my blog is http://www.kaysbookshelf.com :)
I usually go by Kay, but if there are more Kay's than just me we'll just see what can be done :)
@Emily: Currently I have no plans to include New Spring. But who knows, perhaps we'll all be so excited that we'll just tack it onto the end.
@Kay: You've been added!
You know what? I'm in. I just read the entire thing but I think it'll be fun to read it again and actually discussing it with people.

For other sources chack out the 13th depository and the WOT Faq and WOT encyclopedia. Great collections of the finer details.
Will find great insights to add to the reread. Might also suggest breaking the books up into smaller chunks - there is so much material in each book - waiting until the end might be too much to reflect on the intricate details. Perhaps breaking into themes or characters for discussion threads will help discussions.
@Reep: Excellent suggestions, of course! I do plan to make use of the Tor re-read threads, but didn't know abotu the FAQ or Encyclopedia.
I don't feel comfortable breaking the books up, because that would require people--who may not have the time--to read the books faster than they're able and make this stressful for them. However, I think that the format of the discussion posts will help jog everyone's memory and promote discussion. You'll have to give me feedback on if I accomplish that in January. :)
I'm in! Almost done with TGS, and I really want to do a re-read before the next installment comes out. Perfect timing!
