Have you heard the buzz for Rosemary and Rue? If not, then you haven't been listening hard enough. Here's one of the newest stories that will be joining the ranks of urban fantasy this September. Not only is Rosemary and Rue the debut novel of Seanan McGuire, but it's just damn good.
October "Toby" Daye is a Changeling and thus, caught between two worlds. Changelings are the children of Faerie-Human couplings and have no true stake in either world. After a tragic event tears Toby from her human family, Toby tries to forge her own path in between both worlds. Along the way she begins to realize how many many friends--and enemies--she has regardless of her self-imposed exile and gets pulled into solving the murder of one of her Fae friends.
There's a great many things I love about Rosemary and Rue. Not the least of these is the character Toby. I love her fallibility. I love how broken-hearted she is when she doesn't live up to the standards she sets for herself (or what others expect or hope from her). Toby's life doesn't wrap up nicely and people are out to use her rather than care for her. She's really a character who deserves a happy ending, or at least some peace. The second most loved aspect of the book (and I admit to be ridiculously biased because of my location), but the setting in which Faerie is interwoven with San Francisco is just utterly perfect. Some of the lines about the city (especially its chaotic streets) really made me chuckle.
Give Rosemary and Rue a shot. The October Daye series is sure to have a legion of fans before long. And because the series is just starting, one may as well start out following Toby from the beginnning.
Quick and Dirty: Love at First Sight.
Just keep this in mind: September 1st, September 1st, September 1st. Any fan of urban fantasy or San Fran native should be going out to pick up a copy of McGuire's debut Rosemary and Rue. You won't be sorry.

I can't wait to get this! It's been on the WWBL (Wanton Wantin' Book List) since I first heard about it.
Broken-hearted, fallible character? Sign me up. I've been looking forward to this one for awhile. Thanks for the review. I really can't wait to check it out.
