Armageddon. Zombies. These are subjects that cannot be overdone--as far as I'm concerned--in books. Thus, I may be somewhat biased.
A never-named U.S. naval officer decides to keep a journal the same year that a disease (which results in, of course, zombification) besets the world. This journal becomes a day by day account of the end of civilization, hence the title: Day by Day Armageddon.
Everything else be damned, what I enjoyed about Day by Day Armageddon was the military authenticity. From the cover of the later editions that reads "FM" (field manual), the passing mentions of Human Intelligence or HUMINT, and every other detail--I was enthralled. The decision to use the journal format only compliments the military aspect, as the journal reads somewhat like a captain's log.
And Bourne does one thing exceptionally right in his account of his survivors. The story is, indeed, about the survivors. Day by agonizing day, the book gives a window into their plight. Detail by detail, day by day.
Early in the book (p24), I read this part and just knew that I was going to love Day by Day Armageddon:
| I pumped the canister to get pressure to the sprayer and doused the bastards with kerosene. They were fucking pissed, or hungry, or both, I don't know. I lit a match and threw it at the closest one, no dice, didn't ignite. I repeated this three more times as these vicious things kept clawing at the wall trying to get to me. Finally on the fourth attempt one of them caught fire. I knew I had to stay there on the ladder so I could make them bump into each other and spread the fire. |
The only problem, really, that the volume is less than 200 pages and leaves one wanting more. So let's hope that Bourne makes good on his promise to publish Day by Day Armageddon 2: The Fall.
Quick and Dirty: Love at First Sight.
A fantastic and original look at Armageddon via zombie. I highly suggest any fan of horror, zombie, or end of the world fiction to pick this one up. Also, after you're done with Day by Day Armageddon, we can all wait eagerly together for the sequel (which was recently confirmed). I also recommend reading World War Z and Patient Zero.
What's next for Book Love Affair?
Lee Child's Gone Tomorrow should be up for review here shortly. Also, since the contest is over, BLA needs ideas on what to go for the next giveaway. Feel free to leave any suggestions you may have.
